Hair Loss in Women, It’s Not Just a Male Issue

When you hear the phrase “Going bald” an image of a man usually pops into your head. Hair loss in women is actually a serious issue for millions of women worldwide every year. Although male hair loss is more common, it is much more devastating for women. We see men with shaved heads quite often, and if that look works for them, they can easily go about life without worrying about their hair loss.

There are several types of hair loss in women. The most frustrating one is Androgenetic Alopecia. In laymen’s terms this type is caused by genetics. The frustration sets in when women realize that thinning hair or female pattern baldness are in their future.

Another common cause of female hair loss is hormones. Any change in a women’s hormonal balance can cause her hair to fall out. Some women experience this when they become pregnant or it can be a side effect of getting on or off birth control. Hair loss in women can also be caused by certain medications.

Another less common but very real and serious cause of hair loss in women is a disorder called Trichotillomania. People suffering from Trichotillomania have an uncontrollable urge to pull out their own hair. It is unknown exactly what brings on this disorder but it seems to be a self-soothing way of coping with anxiety and stress.

These are just a few types and causes of female hair loss. Regardless of why women suffer from hair loss, it is important to know that no one has to live with the consequences of it.
