Surprising Causes of Hair Loss

It is believed that genetics are a common cause of hair loss. What is not so common knowledge is the many other factors that may contribute to the issue. If you find that your hair is suddenly thinning or shedding severely, and you are not sure why, the following list may help. Even though these situations seem very common, most people don’t realize that they can in fact cause hair loss.

Childbirth

Hair loss shortly after childbirth is normal. During pregnancy, the body normally has healthier, shinier, thicker hair. After the child is born, estrogen levels lower and any extra hair that grew or was held into pregnancy will fall out. New mothers should expect hair loss for months after birth.

Hair Dryers

Although hair dryers can be very convenient, some can be very harmful to your hair and even cause hair loss. Since hair dryers use high temperatures, they can damage or burn your hair, causing it to break off. Most of the time, hairs break off in small pieces instead of whole strands. Steps can be taken to avoid hair damage with hair dryers. If you use it on a low temperature or just be sure you don’t leave it on one section for too long, you will be safer from hair damage.

Diet

Your diet has a huge impact on your body, even your hair. If you aren’t getting the correct amounts of certain vitamins, nutrients and minerals in your body, you could experience hair thinning or loss. Diets that are deficient can stop the production of new hair follicles, even if you are still shedding old strands. Diets with the aim to lose weight can also cause hair loss.

Anesthesia

It is not commonly know that undergoing general anesthesia can cause loss of hair. If you get put under for a surgery, it is not uncommon to experience some hair loss. Due to the fact that the general anesthesia and the surgery itself put the body under lots of stress, it affects the life cycle of your hair. This can result in short term hair loss that is temporary, and should return to a normal cycle within a few months.
