Spring Hairstyles 2017: Over 50 and Fabulous!

There’s an accepted “truism” that most have heard: Men become distinguished with age, while women just get old. The science behind this phenomenon aside, it doesn’t mean every woman’s fate is to wither into a shriveled, ancient-looking hag. All a woman needs to do is reach deep inside, find her inner diva, and consider trying new and trendy spring hairstyles.

Then go get a new hairstyle.

Fight Aging with Tooth, Nail and Hairstyle

A woman who is over 50 doesn’t have to advertise it (unless she wants to). A couple applications of whitening strips can bleach years off teeth. A trip to the nail salon can push back years from the fingers and toes along with those creeping cuticles.

The hairstyle may take a little more thought. To keep up with her fabulous inner diva bubbling to the surface, the hairstyle needs to be something more than the traditional blue-tinted cotton swab imitation.

The spring hairstyles need to reflect what’s trending in 2017.

Long and Luxurious Takes Work

Long hair is a pain to most older women because it takes more time to style and manage. As women age, the hair tends to become thinner and more brittle. For this reason, most older women opt for a shorter style.

Those who don’t want to give up long hair, though, should remember that long locks need frequent conditioning. Use a moisturizing shampoo formulated for gray or older hair. Keep the ends trimmed, and consider going with a layered look. That will give thinner hair more volume and bounce.

Long, wavy curls are a timeless, low-maintenance classic for older women, and they work for any occasion. Styling in a loose upsweep or messy bun can be an alluring look. Accent braids are also an effective look for older hair.

Medium Length for the Over-50 Crowd

If a medium length is more to your liking, go for a shoulder length bob cut. This is a type of cut that can give lots of volume to the hair. When going for a layered, shoulder-length look, consider a cut that encourages the hair to lay in soft waves.

Short and Sassy

Short styles are by far the favorite of the over-50 set. These styles are easy to care for and are flattering on just about every woman, regardless of age.

Bobs, layered or not, are complementary to half-century-old faces. Pixie and shag styles are two layered cuts that go well with a face that’s over 50. Here are some details to consider:
A good pixie cut is short with lots of layers. It will usually have wispy edges highlighting the nape of the neck and the ears. This style can look fun and edgy by spiking the top or backcombing to add volume.

Bangs tend toward longer lengths, but that’s usually based on the preference of the lady.

The shag style is usually cut to about chin length and features lots of volume at the crown. There should be lots of texture at the sides for emphasis, and this cut usually has long, side-swept bangs.

Bob cuts are classic at any age. Standard bobs are one length all around. Some may go with an A-line cut, which is typically shorter at the back. With this type of bob, there are sharp angles where the hair is longer in the front.

Waves work with any of these styles to add dramatic effect or just for something a little different.

Over 50 and Fabulous

Regardless of which spring hairstyles a woman chooses, it will look fabulous if she owns it, works it and lets it shine with the life to which only gray hair can speak!
