Heart Disease and Baldness in Men: Is There a Common Factor?

Premature male pattern baldness and men with premature grey hair could possibly signify something greater than issues with self-esteem alone. According to recent studies, both show links to coronary artery disease or at the very least, a possible greater risk of heart disease.

The most recent study conducted in India shows that:

Young men with coronary artery disease had a higher prevalence of premature greying (50% versus 30%) and male-pattern baldness (49% versus 27%) compared to healthy controls. After adjusting for age and other cardiovascular risk factors, male-pattern baldness was associated with a 5.6 times greater risk of coronary artery disease and premature greying was associated with a 5.3 times greater risk.

More Research Needed

While these studies have been conducted in other countries as well, with similar results, you should keep in mind that the study only conducted the study on a small focus group of under 3000 men and that a specific ethnicity was chosen.

Are You at Risk?

If you are experiencing premature male pattern baldness, it does not necessarily mean that you are a shoe-in for cardiovascular problems. In fact, more testing is needed to be sure there is a direct correlation.

Other factors affect the risk for heart disease such as smoking, being overweight, Type 2 Diabetes, high triglycerides, hypertension, and a family history of heart disease.

What Can You Do?

There are always risk factors when it comes to diseases and while some cannot be influenced, there are things that help ensure that you have a lower risk for heart disease. A healthy lifestyle with eating healthy, a diet rich in fiber, and plenty of exercise is a good idea for anyone – not just those with a history of heart disease in their family or those experiencing premature balding or premature grey hair.
