For women, the very thought of hair loss can be devastating—yet it’s something that happens. Female hair loss is more common than you might think. Fortunately, it’s not something you have to settle for. There are a number of ways to combat female hair loss, but the first step is visiting us in our studio so that we can take a closer look and recommend some customized solutions.

With men, hair loss usually has one cause—male pattern baldness. The causes of female hair loss are quite a bit more numerous and varied. When you visit us in our salon space, we can take some images of your scalp and get a better sense of why you might be losing your hair. This allows us to better individualize our treatment approach.

As for potential causes of female hair loss, one of the most notable is androgenetic alopecia—also known as female pattern hair loss. Though this isn’t quite as common as its male equivalent, it is something women should know about. This condition is caused by an excess in male hormones, which prevents the follicles from doing their job. It can lead to shedding and to impeded hair growth.

There are other potential causes of female hair loss—even other forms of alopecia. Both alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis can lead to hair loss all over the body, not just on the scalp—though these conditions are fairly rare.

Lifestyle can be a factor. For example, how do you typically wear your hair? Tight buns, braids, and ponytails can cause what’s known as traction alopecia—wherein the hair is pulled so much that the follicles become damaged. The result can be permanent hair loss.
Any hormonal imbalance can cause hair loss, and that includes post-partum and menopause. Likewise, medical treatment can result in female hair loss; consider the effects of chemotherapy, radiation, and certain oral medications.

There is also trichotillomania, a nervous condition marked by the compulsive pulling or twisting of the hair. Again, the result can be scarring and permanent hair loss.

No matter the cause of hair loss, solutions are available—and we’re happy to offer a full range of hair loss solutions here in our Milwaukee studio.
