Synthetic Wigs Vs. Human-Hair Wigs: Pros and Cons

From everyday citizens to A-list celebrities, everybody seems to be embracing the fashion wig these days. But if you’re intrigued by the idea of seeing how a wig can subtly or not-so-subtly alter your look, style and attitude, you’ve got to address one major question right off the bat — do you go with a synthetic wig or human-hair wigs? The answer is not as cut-and-dried as you might think, because both types of wigs have their own distinct advantages and disadvantages. Let’s see how they compare on various points.

Realism

Ultimately, nothing looks more like human hair than human hair. But although a human-hair wig can win in the realism category, a high-quality synthetic wig can give it a run for its money. The colors and textures of today’s synthetic fibers make a close match for the real thing.

Cost

Human hair cannot be manufactured; it must be harvested from people’s heads. This makes it a harder-to-obtain commodity by definition. Human-hair wigs are therefore more expensive than their synthetic counterparts. Synthetic wigs can vary widely in cost, but even the best of them can feel like a comparative bargain. If budget is a serious factor, look at synthetics first.

Styling

The subject of styling is an interesting one in the choice between human-hair wigs and synthetic wigs. When it comes to actually manipulating the hair itself, there’s no comparison. Human hair is much easier to shape and style than synthetic hair; you can also dye and color it. On the other hand, synthetic wigs come pre-styled, which means you keep different wigs in different styles without ever having to touch a curling iron. Additionally, changing your hair color is as easy as changing your wig.

Convenience

Synthetic wigs beat human-hair wigs in the convenience category. Not only do they require no styling “out of the box,” but they can hold a given style perfectly until they finally wear out after four to six months. (This estimated lifespan is another point in their favor, since human-hair wigs only last about half that long before they require replacement.) Synthetic wigs do have to be washed and conditioned from time to time, but not as frequently as human-hair wigs.

As you can see, human-hair wigs and synthetic wigs each have points in their favor, as well as potential downsides to consider. But now that you understand the critical difference between these types of accessories, you can make a decision more likely to suit your lifestyle. Good luck, and happy shopping!
